1.6 should not be free because why give away your stuff and not make any money? CS:GO is free because it has many ways to be monetized that are more valuable than charging $15 for the game itself. There is a couple of other tools out there but for me, BSPSource works best. Valve makes money off CS:S because of GMod. Im not sure if it actually works with 1.6 to CS:GO, but if you want to decompile CS:S maps, CS:GO maps and some other Source engine based maps I would recommend using BSPSource. There is no incentive to make old titles F2P and potentially take away from what they're trying to achieve by making CS:GO free. It wasn't just because they wanted to give the title away for free and open it up to a cheat fest. At least with it costing money, they can still monetize their investment.ĬS:GO was made F2P in order to draw in new players (but existing on Steam) with the release a new Major casual game mode. I don't know where in your brain you would think a billion dollar corporation wants to make $0 on their IP. You made an absolutely terrible point by saying "Valve shouldn't need to be making money on them still". CS:S will likely never be free because GMod uses a significant portion of it's assets and you gotta have CS:S purchased to use them.ġ.6, well, there's really no point in making it free.
